How To Reach Shimla

To reach Shimla, a popular hill station in India, you have various transportation options depending on your location and preferences. Here are some common methods of reaching Shimla:

  1. By Air: The nearest airport to Shimla is the Jubbarhatti Airport, located about 23 kilometers away. However, this airport has limited connectivity, and only a few flights operate from here. The closest major airport with better connectivity is Chandigarh International Airport, located approximately 120 kilometers away. From the airport, you can hire a taxi or take a bus to reach Shimla.
  2. By Train: Shimla does not have a railway station of its own. The nearest major railway station is Kalka Railway Station, situated around 90 kilometers away. From Kalka, you can take the historic Kalka-Shimla Toy Train, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which offers a scenic journey through the hills. The toy train takes approximately 5-6 hours to reach Shimla. Alternatively, you can hire a taxi or take a bus from Kalka to Shimla, which takes around 2-3 hours.
  3. By Road: Shimla is well-connected by road, and you can reach there by bus or private vehicle. Several state-run and private buses operate regular services to Shimla from various cities in North India. The journey time by bus depends on the distance and the starting point. If you prefer to drive, you can take the national or state highways leading to Shimla. The roads are generally well-maintained, but be prepared for steep and winding mountain roads.

It’s important to note that Shimla experiences heavy tourist traffic during peak seasons, so it’s advisable to plan and book your transportation in advance to ensure availability.
